Community Supported Agriculture:

CSA is a system where you directly help the farmer and save money at the same time. In this system you prepay for the local farm produce in the winter or the spring, and during the summer’s harvest time you will get a weekly share from the local farm. Some CSA farms even accept labor contributions as a payment (From: USDA). CSA farms are present everywhere, look for one near you (via Local Harvest, Biodynamic Farming or Wilson College). Note: some CSA’s are not organic because they are too small to pay for certifications. Make a weekend trip out of it, go visit and look at the farm, talk to the owner.

ALTERNATIVES

  • If you do not have access to CSA or to your garden,  you can purchase organic food in the store. By paying more for organic food, you are paying for your health – and to ensure farmers who grow quality food stay in business to feed you quality food tomorrow. It just boils down to paying for food today or to doctors later on. I choose first. Here is a page designated to Organic Food stores
  • Grow some of your own food. Use your backyard to make a raised bed, or join a community garden.
